Client Question:
How can an organization go about creating a new data catalogue?

Civic Sphere worked with the National Center for Applied Transit Technology’s office in Washington D.C. in 2023, providing the “Creating a Data Catalogue” worksheet to be added online to its Tech University platform during 2023/24.

The answer? Follow the 3 steps laid out in the form of 3 worksheet exercises. First, users are guided through a process of pinpointing situations (“use cases”) that would involve using data so that the catalogue will be purpose oriented. Second, users are guided through a process of considering all the data types that would be needed in order to address the use case requirements. Third, users are guided in drafting a data catalogue, bringing together the work from the previous 2 exercises. In addition, the worksheet introduction explains what a data catalog is, reasons to use one, and how “use cases” help to orient a new data catalog.
