Project Details:
Improving the accessibility of all the transportation options in the Atlanta region involved working with an enormous amount of stakeholders. Groups representing people with limited mobility and those 65+ played an important role, as did the 10+ public transport agencies in the region of more than 5 million residents and 11 counties.
For the “Human Services Transportation Plan,” the approach was to educate leaders of each county on practical work they could do to improve accessibility. A process was created to help each leader identify what new activities and projects they should undertake, and how to get them funded. An incentive system was also created to give them credit for these improvements. At the same time, some projects were joint, region-wide efforts, such as those with the 10+ public transport agencies. The way forward in such a large, complex area is to work at both large and small scales – empower everyone to make their own local contributions and pursue large, multi-stakeholder projects.
The strategic plan was delivered in 2016. The project was led by the owner of Civic Sphere from 2014-2016 when she was the manager of the Accessible Transportation Program of the Atlanta Regional Commission.
